A favicon is a resource file used by web sites to customise a visitor’s experience of the site in their browser — albeit in a small way. If you bookmark a site that has a favicon, the favicon may be displayed against the site name in the bookmark list. A .ico file is actually a Windows format icon file (yes, even though a favicon may be served by a Unix web server, and displayed by a browser on a Mac!)
